General Discussion of Various Methods of Moisture Analysis

When moisture content matters, count on Moisture Register Products, a division of Aqua Measure Instrument Co.

Meters designed to measure moisture are evolving as the need emerges to quantify the concentration of moisture in solid materials under many different processing conditions. Conventional instruments for measuring moisture employ offline methods, which take time and often lead to sampling errors. In process control, however, instruments that are applied on-stream and in real time are more widely used. Moisture instruments can be classified by the operation principle employed. Some sensors make direct contact with the material being measured, while others depend upon non-contact infrared (IR) reflection, IR transmission, radio frequency (RF) dielectric measurement, or microwave measurement.

Moisture Register Products uses all of these technologies in its various moisture instruments and can therefore recommend the exact device that will best suit the client’s application. IR non-contact instruments constitute the vast majority of moisture measurements made on powder and bulk solid materials—primarily because of their ease of installation, superb reliability, and unequaled accuracy. The MRP Model BSP901 is an example of this type instrumentation. Should the client require offline moisture measurement, the Model MCPC laboratory analyzer is ideal for instantaneous moisture analysis without harming the measured product in any way. No heat or chemicals are used in this RF dielectric device. Many models of handheld portable instruments are also available for powder and bulk solid measurements, especially the Model G9 probe-type instrument.
